Making for quite the star-studded celebration, a gathering of celebs teamed up for the taping of "VH1 Divas" Celebrates Soul in New York City, NY on Sunday night (December 18).
Held at the Hammerstein Ballroom, some of music's grandest names
such asMary J Blige, Dolly Parton, 50 Cent, Jessie J
and Jennifer Hudson strutted their stuff in the arrivals
area before heading inside to film the music special.
With The Roots tending to house
band duties, the "VH1 Divas" special featured a tribute to the
prominent birthplaces of soul music, including Chicago, Detroit, London,
Philadelphia and Memphis, Tennessee.
Another highlight of the evening included the honoring of late
soul singer Amy Winehouse,
which saw Florence and the Machine team with Wanda Jackson to perform
"Back to Black" while Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings offered their
take on "You Know I'm No Good".
Of being selected to take part in the toast to Winehouse, Florence
Welch told MTV News, "It's a real honor, actually, to be counted amongst
these amazing female performers. It's really special for me, because I am still
a relatively new artist, and to be up there with these really established
singers is amazing for me. ... I'm really grateful."
With other performers including Kelly Clarkson,
Boyz II Men and Travie McCoy, "VH1 Divas" is scheduled to air at
Monday night (December 19) at 9 p.m. ET/PT on VH1.
